Research Lab

GGM Science College recently established two Research centers in Physical Sciences and Computers, IT and Electronics under the Hub-Spoke model of Department of Higher Education vide Govt. Order No. 04 of JK (HE) dated 09.09.2020. The research centers are being equipped with stat-of-the-art research equipment and facility. The prime aim of these research centers is to inculcate the research environment in college and to expose the UG/PG students of Hub/Spoke Colleges to research by involving them into research related works. The research labs receive research funding under CAPEX budget of Govt. og UT of JK for the procurement of equipment, materials, chemicals and other research related items. The college faculty is also encouraged to write research proposals for funding from different agencies for finacial support to reinforce the research centers. The college is in progress to establish individual and institutional collaborations with institutes within/outside the UT of JK for research collaborations. The College faculty involved in research is tirelessly working to evolve these centers into a centralized research facility, through discussions and interactions with academia/industry experts, to cater the needs of research faculty of identified Hub/Spoke colleges. The work on research projects with major thrust on social-economic issues has been given the priority. The college encourages the faculty from Spoke colleges to submit research proposals on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research areas to establish a research and innovation ecosystem in the college.
The Research center in Physical Science is equipped with equipment worth 40 Lacs related to nanomaterial engineering and processing for variety of applications. The Computers, IT and Electronics Research Lab is created with high end computer systems for simulation, modelling and soft skill developments and Electronics lab is being raised up with research in sensors and devices for various sensing applications. The college has also nominated as Spoke college for research center for Biosciences.
General rules for the use of research facilities in Physical Research Centre and Computers, IT and Electronics Research Center.
- The Faculty and Students (henceforth are called as facility User) of this College and/or from the nominated Spoke Colleges can use the research facilities available in the Research Centers with prior permission from Principal of the College.
- All Users need to submit a research proposal to the Principal, which will further be reviewed by the College Research Proposal Review Committee (CRPC). The CRPC shall provide peer review comments/feedback on the feasibility of the Research Proposal in concurrence with Research Co-ordiantor (RC). Final approval for the use of facilities will be made by Principal based on the recommendations from CRPC.
- The Research Proposal must be submitted on the prescribed format (Standard DST/SERB/UGC Research Grant Proposal) so as to speed-up the process of review and final approval. A copy of the approved Research proposal shall be submitted to the respective RC.
- The College faculty interested in Supervision/Co-supervision of MSc/MPhil/PhD/Post-Doctoral research students, registered with other intuitions within/outside the UT of JK, shall submit his/her request for permission to access the research facilities and labs with following documents
- Student details; Name/Contact no./Email/ residential address.
- Supervision/Co-supervision permission/Authorization letter from the registering institution.
- PhD synopsis or a brief research proposal/project report/ including the list of instrument/chemicals to be used by students.
-
A statement from the supervisor/co-supervisor to allow students in the research lab in his/her complete supervision.
- Collaborated research project must be submitted to the principal for approval. The format for the collaborative research project must contains details of the researchers collaborating, mutual contribution and sharing of resources and potential outcomes. Research Review Committee shall review the individual/collaborated research proposal and propose approval or rejection with appropriate reasons. The external users shall have access to research facility only in the supervision of authorized College faculty.
- The User need to get instrument/equipment operational training prior to its use. The training to the Users may be provided by the Research Coordinator or a trained faculty of the college. Following the training, Research Coordinator, after satisfactory evaluation, shall provide the user with a Certificate of completion of training and authorization of independent use of facility.
- No User is allowed to fiddle with any Instrument/Equipment unless he/she is certified and authorized person. Fiddling of expensive equipment by an unauthorised/uncertified person can adversely affect the warranty/guarantee associated with each equipment.
- A damaged or non-functional equipment shall be reported to Research Coordinator immediately. A detailed report of damaged/non-functional equipment shall be submitted to Principal by Research Coordinator with potential expenses and time to repair.
- The researcher or users should prepare the safety and health related hazards or risk for each chemical or material he/ she used in the prescribed Control of Substances Hazards to Health Regulations (CoSHH). CoSHH of Risk assessment format shall be framed and circulated in the research lab assistant. Signed form shall be approved by the research Co-ordinator before allowing the use equipment or chemicals.
- The Chemicals and Regent waste must be properly managed and disposed-off as per the Standard Chemical waste management. No Chemical/solvent/regent must be drained through the general purpose laboratory drainage system. This is to avoid mixing of chemical waste with environment causing
- The Research Laboratory use time will be normal college timing. In exceptional cases, where the Researcher is required to stay slightly longer in the lab i.e beyond the normal working hours, the User must sough a permission from the Principal prior to stay for extended time.
- User staying in research laboratory beyond the working hours must ensure that he/she has someone in surrounding during the time of extended stay or can ask some faculty members to keep in touch with him/her through phone.
- Each user will sign off his/her entry and leaving time in the entry register in each research lab. In addition, record of user using equipment/instrument will be maintained in machine log register.
- The User from the College can select students from their subjects for research facility exposure through their subject curriculum projects and supervise and arrange the use of facility.
- The Users must acknowledge the use of research facilities in their publications and presentations in conference, webinars, seminars, workshops etc.
- All research facilities are free for internal/External-Collaborative Users, except for an independent external User (with no internal collaboration). In such cases, the facility use fee shall be considered on individual basis by the College administration.
- The Users must follow lab manuals and specific instructions related to each equipment/instrument in each research lab.
